    Another nice thing about a 6" dob, especially with a 2" focuser, is the f8 focal ratio is really easy on eyepieces, like the 30mm superview that comes with the bigger models, at f5 and f6, there is considerable astimatism (and coma) in the outer part of the field, and at f8 it is nowhere near as bad, so you dont need to go to the big heavy panoptic, nagler and copies of those eyepieces to get decent edge performance. Superviews, Q70s and UWA80s work pretty well at f8.

    In reading some of the comments about Barlows I see that some have went one step higher and got the 2x -2in televu Powermate. Barlows are good just don't buy a cheap one,you'll regret it. Remember this you all garbage in garbage out. Spend the couple extra $ you will only need to do it once and the rewards will pay off 2 fold. I've had mine since 2008 alone with a Paracor for my 8in and 14 in dobs. Best money ever spent. I'm not blowing my own whistle I just want to make all of you aware of a little extra goes a long way for the future,because those two accessory will last a life time for any 2 in. focuser scope.

    I went through several cheap Barlow lens and they are always a problem. The clarity dropped and my focus were far off when switching. I got dissuaded from it until recently when the folks at cloudy nights mentioned getting a Barlow. I ended up buying a Televue 2x 2” Powermate. I have ZERO regrets shelling out money for it because I can barely tell the difference in clarity with and without it.

    • @barisoz
      @barisoz 24 дні тому

      @@LateNightAstronomy Yes i shoot them on the same night. I actually did chose a reference frame but it did not help. I mean it is better when i chose a reference frame but it drift anyways(Before chosing a reference frame the galaxy in the final image would look like straight long line. But after chosing a reference frame it would look like i have 2 or 3 more galaxy and stars in the image. With less drifting but several pieces of the same object). I did not shoot darks,bias,flats btw, i only shoot lights to try if it works the alignment thing. I know i wont have a good picture after stacking only the lights but i think it is enough to understand that if objects are drifting or not. Or should i try stacking with all of the things that required like FLAT,BIAS,DARK ? I can send you my images if you want to look at. I really dont know what is happening and how to fix.. When I use a 3x Barlow lens on my Maksutov Cassegrain (1500mm focal length, 127mm aperture), I see a bright spot in the middle when taking photos with a camera. I can't see this visually, but in this case I can't really see the image in focus, or the contrast is very weak, especially with bright objects (e.g. the moon), so that it's no longer really possible to focus, and you can hardly recognize anything). With the camera the image is clearer and sharp except in the area where the bright spot is. If I don't use the Barlow lens, but instead use a longer distance (connection to the telescope + deflection + 55mm camera adapter), I can also see the bright spot even wothout barlow lense. The further I pull the camera out, the sharper the spot becomes until a ring can be seen. This is despite the fact that the object being observed can still be brought into focus. The ring looks like the small interior mirror of the Maksutov. (like looking into the telescope with the naked eye without an eyepiece and without anything) Is this normal, or is there something wrong? I've had the Barlow lens for a while, but I only noticed the spot while observing the moon with the Barlow lens. I'm not sure if I've done that before, but I don't think so. If it's normal, I'd be surprised, because that would mean that the image is actually always somewhat blurred by a very large version of the spot, even if you don't have that big of an optical path.

      Thanks for providing such a detailed explanation. I'm honestly not sure but I do wonder if a 3x barlow might be pushing a 1500 FL scope too much. I would look at a 2x barlow perhaps but I don't know if that would change your ring reflection problem. Does it do this even on faint objects or just bright stars you are trying to image?

    What’s the reason behind flat frames needing to be the same orientation?

    • @LateNightAstronomy
      @LateNightAstronomy 27 днів тому

      It involves keeping the imaging chain the same. If it is trying to cancel out a slightly unfocused piece of dust on the lens or an aberration specific to the lens it needs to be in the same orientation to correct it for the final image since it showed up in all the shots at that exact spot.

    Can you take the dark, flat and bias frames at a later date than when you capture the lights? Say I'm on a backpacking trip with friends, and I spend a half hour to 45 mins while camping taking Milkyway photos, can I then come back home, and take the darks, flats and biases at a later date so that I'm not taking up too much of my time taking these on site?

    • @LateNightAstronomy
      @LateNightAstronomy Місяць тому

      Good question. In most cases you can't do that. The angle and positioning of the lens need to be the same for the flat frames, the dark frames need to be roughly the same temperature as the light frames. Perhaps you could for the bias frames but those are the quickest and easiest to do.

    2024: A year of cosmic events. A total Solar eclipse captivated sky gazers in western hemisphere on April 8. This year also will reveal a comet , soon to be visible in the night sky. Superstitious housewives, excited astronomers, conspiracy theorists : all types of Sapiens are intensely interested in these cosmic events. From the depth of space, a nomadic celestial body is fast approaching our solar system. A comet ! Captivating the eyes and imaginations of millions of sky gazers. A comet is a cosmic wanderer , intruding upon our solar neighbourhood occasionally. Like when a unknown stranger intrudes on our neighbourhood, all dogs start barking, housewives will peer out from their windows to stare at the stranger, fear and suspicions in their mind. And later when the stranger is gone, all the fears and suspicions will also melt away. A comet is also like that stranger who trespass on our solar neighbourhood occasionally. And we stare at it until it's gone....and forgotten. Unlike other planets, these marauding monsters do not have a fixed path. They are like nomadic gypsies of space... always moving unpredictably. That's why there is an element of fear linked to a comet. Of course thanks to science, we know now that these celestial objects are just huge blocks of ice and dust roaming around the universe. But for our illiterate ancestors, these unusual events must have triggered fear and hysteria."What is that thing in the sky? Why did it arrive ? What will happen now ?" People always fear what they don't understand. That's why superstitions are called the product of ignorance. Comets and solar eclipses were considered evil omens : harbingers of death and disasters on earth. In ancient times, comets were often viewed as prelude to catastrophe, wars, plagues, and other calamities. The appearance of a comet was believed to signal the arrival of dark forces.Even today, echoes of these superstitions remain , even in western world. Reminiscent of the 1997 Hale Bopp comet . Dozens of Americans had committed mass suicide coinciding with this comet. Those suicidals belonged to a cult known as Heaven's Gate , who believed that comet is an extraterrestrial vehicle to paradise. Exactly thirty years ago in 1994 a comet crashed on Jupiter, seen live on TV by worldwide audience for the first time in history. A spectacular sight which inspired doomsday Hollywood movies like Armageddon. In 1995 there was a total Solar eclipse, seen by millions in Asia. I remember watching with my family the live telecast in Door darshan TV. I also remember the hysteria among many people in south Asia related to those cosmic events. Oh yes , who can forget that infamous Lord Ganesha rumour? Obviously these were the same people who wasted millions of litres of milk after a rumour spread that statues of Lord Ganesha are drinking milk offered by devotees. Even thirty years ago, before the arrival of the internet and social media viral videos, that rumour had spread really fast. Welcome to the Republic of rumours ! On the positive side, comets have also been heralded as symbols of rebirth and renewal. In some cultures, these celestial visitors are seen as messengers of change, signalling new beginnings and spiritual awakening. Fortune-tellers and astrologers will offer their own astrological interpretations, telling tales of new change in destiny. Astrological rings and amulets will sell like hotcakes. If you are an astrologer or astronomer, a cosmic event is always good for business. For any curious star watcher , seeing a comet travelling across the sky inspires wonder and reflection, compelling humanity to contemplate the meaning of vast cosmos.How insignificant our earthly personal problems feel when we behold such extraordinary cosmic events. Hopefully this year the public will not fall into mindless rumours and superstitions.
